Move the light

Every stone is chosen by eye, set by hand and finished by the person who first drew it

Lysande began at a single bench in a narrow room above a goldsmith's shop. The bench is still there. So is the habit of looking at each diamond under daylight, never under a lamp, because daylight tells the truth about colour.

We work only with recycled gold and platinum, and with stones we can trace to the cutter. Each piece takes between forty and one hundred and twenty hours, and leaves the studio with a drawing signed by the jeweller who made it.

01

The drawing

Day one

Every piece starts as a pencil drawing at full size. We draw it from the front, the side and from above, until the stone looks as if it is floating.

02

The wax and the cast

Week one

The drawing is carved in wax by hand, then cast in recycled gold. We pour a little extra so there is metal left to refine.

03

The setting

Week two

Claws are raised under a microscope and folded over the stone one by one. A single slip means starting again, so nobody rushes this part.

04

The polish

Week three

Five grades of polish, from rough stone to soft leather, until the metal is bright enough to reflect the diamond back into itself.

05

The hallmark

The last day

The piece is tested, stamped and signed. It comes home with the original drawing, folded inside the box.

Made

for one

A ring made only for your hand

Bring a stone that matters to you, or let us find one. We sketch together, make a silver sample you can wear for a week, and only then begin in gold.

Before you choose

The questions we hear most at the studio, answered the way we would answer them across the bench.

Wrap a strip of paper around the base of your finger in the evening, when fingers are slightly larger. Mark where it overlaps, measure the length in millimetres and find it below.

Yes, by up to two sizes, and the first resize is always free. Eternity rings set all the way round are the exception, so we size those twice before we begin.

Often. We inspect the stone first, tell you honestly how strong it is, and design a setting that protects it. The old gold can be melted into the new piece if you wish.

All our gold and platinum is recycled and refined locally. Diamonds come from cutters we have visited, with paperwork that follows each stone.
